UAL corp y2k spending...Last paragraph sounds like a job for TAVA! RAVEL United Air to Spend About $15 Million On Year 2000 Problem The Wall Street Journal via Dow Jones CHICAGO -- UAL Corp.'s United Airlines expects to spend about $15 million reprogramming its mainframe and network-based computers in advance of the year 2000. The nation's largest carrier said it began working on the so-called Y2K problem in 1995 and estimates it has completed about 60% of the work needed on its critical mainframe applications. The initial modification phase will be completed this year, United said, and testing of these applications will continue throughout 1999. The Y2K problem is expected to affect all computers backing up the activities of businesses, governments, utilities and financial institutions. Early computer programmers used only two digits to designate years in their programs. But when the year 2000 approaches, computers may interpret dates containing two zeroes as 1900 instead of 2000. United estimates that 11,000 of the 40,000 computer programs it uses need to be modified. These programs handle functions including aircraft scheduling, maintenance planning, seat-inventory management and United's frequent-flier plan. Also, the carrier's Y2K team is investigating other United equipment that may use dates, including aircraft avionics, telecommunications gear, flight simulators, baggage systems and airport-access systems. United said it hopes to be "Year 2000 compliant" by the end of March 1999. WSJviaNewsEDGE :PAGE: NPC :TICKER:UAL . SUBJECT: AIR IL WSJ Copyright (c) 1998 Dow Jones and Company, Inc.
