People are taking their eye off the ball. I doubt the street ever assumed in any significant way that Apple was going to go cross-platform. That was purely info bandied about among people like us. I doubt it ever impacted the stock price except when Microsoft made their original investment announcement. Therefore, I doubt the stock will decline to any significant degree, it's recent rise is based on the new hardware and the increased earnings they represent. The software earnings probably never entered into the equation to any great degree. We still have the increased earnings that the hardware will bring and so the price target remains 35-37 by July IMO. Rich

Travis read AAPL's press release - Rhapsody is not MacOS 10

Considering S Jobs' baby is NeXT and all AAPL's zecks are NeXT folks there can be only 3 possible reasons for today's OS disaster:

1. He wants the stock price lowered for his options

2. He is working a deal with MSFT to sell Rhapsody

3. He is working a deal with IBM to sell AAPL

Can you believe Mac 10 in a year and 1/2 -- if so bring on BE OS .

Regards,
Jim K.

Travis sez:

Dave-thanks for the feedback. :)

Also remember that OS 10 (announced today) will require a G3 to run.

I don't think this is true. It's simply targeted at the G3.

-----

Considering that the G3 will be a full two years old by the time Mac OS X ships, who cares? Those who want to stick with older hardware at the time should be happy enough with Mac OS 8.6. Exactly how far back should Apple maintain backward compatibility for legacy hardware (and thus cripple advanced OS features)?

If you want to run the latest and greatest OS, then by gum, you'd better we willing to shell out the dough for new hardware. How many hardware upgrades did Windows 95 prompt? Plenty, I can assure you...

Note: This post is not directed at you, Travis, but to those who simply can't seem to envision the future and have a look back at today.

Travis, you have ME confused! Apple was never marketing an OS that would run on Wintel.

You may be getting that confused with the Yellow Box development platform that would allow developers to recode an application into diferent OS's.

Apple was never going to unseat NT or WIN 95/98...not sure what kind of revenue streams you are referring to.

You see, STEVE JOBS DOES WHAT MANY INVESTORS AND OTHER BUSINESSMEN DON'T....

HE LISTENS BETTER, READAPTS, Sometimes CUTS LOSSES, and is not afraid to do what is necessary...things change, competiion and public sentiment change....what sounded good last year needs to be refined. Don't worry about what was spent or what happened in the past....the NEXT OS is already written off and paid for! Look at the future! These changes MAKE SENSE.....I repeat.... these changes make sense....they are not some trial and error mistake of some former CEO.

WHY YOU SHOULD BE EXCITED:

Bear Stearns just said that Apple is at its lowest valuation EVER!

A new machine is coming out called the i-MAC...faster than any Pentium at any price

A new machine called n-Mac (i.e Network Mac), believed to be announced soon, is faster than any Pentium at any price and probably $999.

A new dramatically upgraded eMate mobile unit is coming out early next year. The current eMate is wildly successful in education, so the new one should be doubly so.

G3 Powerbooks are out under $2500, faster than any Wintel laptop.

Costs and economies of scale have been achieved.

But most importantly...DEVELOPERS ARE IN LOVE WITH APPLE AGAIN......that is GOLD!

Sorry, man...I can't find too much to fault here. You can worry and I will smile!

DAVE
