Lair, gone with the wind, huh? NETZ really does know how to make my bad day worse. I can't even get it to stop raining in Boston, never mind get NETZ trading over a dollar! It would appear to me--in my attempt to read between lines--that Lair was originally brought in via the consulting firm he established in his name, Steve Lair Consulting. Note the NEC release didn't mention Zulu. I suspect, from a PR perspective, NEC noted Lair had created his own consultancy (which he likely did), rather than mention Zulu. And I suspect ESVS/Zulu was not mentioned precisely due to the Hayton controversy. Thus, in the course of the transitional period Lair, indeed, did play a role. And it was a good one. We should note he was with the company (likely in the consulting capacity) well before April 20th. I believe the record will show his name listed in previous press releases. In the beginning, a very confident Steve Lair probably offered to help Zulu any way he could. And part of this helping role must have been his willingness to be the take-charge guy during the transition. The transition can be described as Meatchem's frustration and consequent departure (largely due to the SIM mess, which spilled over into Wired), and a reengineered organization with a goal of the ESVS merger, the ultimate goal being that of a Nasdaq listing. Remember, one very important thing happened to Zulu during the time Lair's been involved: The company got completely restructured and is well on target for this merger. Before Lair took over there were two components and the SIM people heading out the door, leaving a trail of bad publicity. Today, there are three components--technology, electronic commerce and sales & marketing--as well as new hires to lead the company. The audit is supposedly complete and the wheels are greased for the merger to occur. Of course, we'll learn more about this in the days ahead. Whatever the motivating reason for his departure--I've hypothesized all of the above from sorting available and known information--Lair has served a very useful role for Zulu-tek. Indeed, he's earned every penny of his consultancy fee, plus he even put his neck on the line by taking charge of the company in a number of ways. As to how Zulu behaved during his short stay? What company wouldn't want to tout a man of his background? And given this background, I'd think it prudent that we should believe Lair's closing words, as expressed in the press release. "My role on the Board of Enhanced was to help stabilize and provide direction to the company in the midst of changes and acquisitions. I feel that this mandate has been achieved, and am confident that the new management team will help the company firmly take its role as a key leader in the online marketing industry," said Mr. Lair. And I think Terry's right. This news should spur further announcements concerning new developments. If in fact ESVS/Zulu has the vertically integrated online computer organization it claims, there has to be some very good news ahead down the road. A worst case scenario might be that Lair took one look at the audit, and decided to split. But I doubt this is the case. Lair is leaving with his honor intact, and thus his closing statement should be believed. I remain long on NETZ, I maintain much that is good that will come. I certainly intend to be around for these new developments.
