If ADSL is so important to MSFT why not offer a stake to them? This might create a desire in Fujitsu to top the offer.

[japan/germany/set-top boxes/vdsl]

hi shlomi,

nice to hear from you... figured you were indeed taking a break (well deserved)... took a short one myself...

interesting news about the second r&d center... if you hear anything regarding what they are working on... would be interested...

if there is a msft or intc connection would think it would be related to either (or both) set-top boxes/ integration of xdsl into networking stuff

have started watching for set-top box news... seems to be a market with a rather significant upside... the msft angle seems to be windows ce and webtv... intc angle, chips and maybe networking stuff

so far have only run across the orctf reference (companion chips) for adsl/set-top boxes... but would think for those markets that seem to be headed for vdsl... a vdsl interface for set-top boxes would seem to be able to do everything that adsl could do.. and better ... two markets which would seem to be at the top of the list would be germany and japan...

the recent vdsl tender win (albeit limited) put those three together for orctf: japan ltd/ dt/vdsl... have been wondering if set-top boxes are involved... emailed orctf and was told that info was confidential... fair enuf... (if anyone out there is in germany and may have any clues.. please post)...

guess at this point we know that: orctf is working with fujitsu for set-top box companion chips... fujitsu is working with msft for webtv japan... intc has chips targeted for set-top boxes... japan and germany are headed for vdsl... japan ltd and orctf are working together on vdsl... and vdsl is close to the ideal delivery system for set-top boxes (short of fiber to the home)... and suppose we should add that with gte converting trials to fujitsu orctf equipment, orctf adsl is now in msft/redmond, wa...

and that the context of all this is that msft and probably intc would like to rule the set-top box world...

altho nothing may come of any of this.. would think there might be the potential for some common ground in there somewhere... for some type of relationship... adsl or vdsl or most likely both

was also thinking it makes sense for fujitsu to take a stake in orctf... seems like gearing up for deployment is gonna burn some cash... and as orctf seems to want to pay their own way now/ so as to share in profits later... they might be needing the $...
