Advanced Fibre Communications Licenses DSL Lite Technology
From Aware

AFC's UMC 1000(R) 3GDLC(TM) Is First to Interoperate With x200

PETALUMA, Calif., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Fibre Communications, Inc.(R) (AFC) (Nasdaq:
AFCI - news) announced today a licensing agreement with Aware Inc. [Nasdaq:AWRE - news] to deliver
a DSL Lite solution.

The licensing agreement will incorporate Aware's leading splitterless DSL Lite technology into AFC's
DMT ADSL plug in for its UMC 1000 3GDLC(TM).

The new DSL Lite accord coincides with the completion of interoperability testing for standard-compliant,
full-rate ADSL between AFC's ADSL DMT line card and Aware's x200, making AFC's 3GDLC(TM) the
first product to be compatible with Aware's x200 modem/router. AFC and Aware's cross-vendor solution
is also believed to be the first example of DSL Lite interoperability based on Analog Devices' AD20msp910
chipset. The AFC/Aware solution will be jointly marketed to carriers.

Both DSL Lite and full-rate ADSL implementations use the Analog Devices/Aware AD20msp910 ADSL
chipset and are fully compatible with the entire installed base of UMC 1000 systems.

DSL Lite is consistent with the goal of the Universal ADSL Work Group (UAWG) which is to propose a
simplified version of ADSL which will deliver to consumers high-speed modem communications over
existing phone lines based on an open interoperable International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
Standard. Both Aware and AFC are members of the UAWG.

''DSL Lite accelerates the commercialization of ADSL technology, making deployment more attractive for
both telephone service providers and end users,'' says Ryan Koontz, manager of business development at
AFC. ''Our close association with Aware combined with our membership in the UAWG affirms our
commitment to delivering ADSL to the masses.''

''With the addition of DSL Lite technology to the ADSL family and the availability of carrier-scalable
equipment, the promise of true high-speed Internet access using ADSL is about to be realized,'' said John
Brandte, director of telecommunications products business at Aware. ''As momentum builds to set
universal standards and achieve interoperability among vendor offerings, we are excited about deploying
our technology to AFC's growing customer base of over 600 customers and 1,000,000 lines worldwide.''

The UAWG specification in development is testament to the commitment of many telecommunications and
computer industry leaders who joined forces to form the UAWG to accelerate the universal standard for
ADSL.

AFC is a leading manufacturer of telecommunications systems for the ''local loop'' between telephone
service users and public telephone networks worldwide. AFC has pioneered a single platform that
supports any network, any transport, and any service. AFC's flagship product the UMC 1000 3rd
Generation Digital Loop Carrier, provides any service from POTS to xDSL over copper, fiber, HDSL, and
radio transport media. Additional information about AFC can be found on the Internet at
fibre.com.

Aware is a worldwide leader in xDSL technology with products that enable high-speed Internet access
over the existing telephone network. Aware's products include xDSL technology, software, development
platforms, modules and modems for high-speed, interactive broadband network applications. Additional
information about Aware can be found on the Internet at aware.com.

The Universal ADSL Working Group (UAWG), composed of leading PC industry, networking, and
telecommunications companies, will develop a set of contributions building on the present T1.413 standard
intended to create quick deployment and adoption of Universal ADSL. With the goal of providing
consumers with assurance that products and services will work together, the UAWG's work will
complement currently planned equipment deployment for full-rate ADSL and help to provide a seamless
migration path from today's modems. In addition the group aims to maximize economy, speed, and
efficiency of both full-rate and Universal ADSL deployments. The group will deliver a series of
contributions to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) G.Lite subcommittee in early 1998, and
it will issue a developer's guide that will set a clear design target for technology vendors. The group
foresees Universal ADSL modems being a preferred PC modem technology by the year 2000. More
information on the UAWG is available at: uawg.org.
