If MTBE is responsible for seal degradation in underground
gasoline tanks, the groundwater contamination problems will
be a lot more extensive than reported up to now. The oil
companies will have to find a solution or they will volunteerily
quit using MTBE. Possible solutions would be to change the
seals to another material (very expensive), use of an inhibitor,
or change the composition of the gasoline (where MIDL comes in).
Just my opinion but it seems logical.
