GINSENG 1

Ginseng is the most popular herb consumed in the USA, with total sales
of close to $78 million in 1997, an increase of 14% over the previous
year. In addition, China consumes over 4 million pounds of American
Ginseng (Xi Yang Shen) annually and prefers it to all other ginseng. The
Chinese ginseng market has an estimated annual growth rate of 10%.
Recently China's largest newspaper, The Peoples Daily, reported an
annual shortfall of 1000 to 2000 tonnes of ginseng in China. Now one US
company (Rocky Mountain Ginseng, Inc.) has purchased outright the Fuzhou
Fujiang Drugs Co. Ltd. to distribute US ginseng in China. The company
estimates that it will sell 70 tonnes of ginseng there in 1999.
