Lucent Technologies Software Enables Consumers to Receive Call-Waiting Signals While Using the Internet

PR Newswire - May 12, 1998 13:08

MURRAY HILL, N.J., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies today announced a new intelligent network (IN) software solution that will allow consumers to receive a "call-waiting" message on their computer screen while using the Internet.

Lucent's Internet Call Waiting solution is intended to be installed in local telephone networks by service providers. The intelligent network solution makes it possible for someone using a home phone line for data access or Internet use to be notified of incoming phone calls by a pop-up on-screen message without disrupting the data connection.

The message offers the Internet user icons that he or she can select to accept the call, route it to voice mail, or ignore the call. Accepting the call is made possible by the Lucent IN Server, that smoothly terminates the Internet connection and connects the incoming call to the person's telephone -- all over the single telephone line. The Internet IN Server uses web-client server technology to provide consumers with enhanced control over their communications.

"Data access has had a monumental impact on how service providers manage residential communications service," said Curtis Holmes, intelligent network vice president for Lucent's Communications Software Group. "With the new Lucent Internet Call Waiting solution, its a win-win for consumers and the service provider. People with a single phone line have the added convenience of managing data access and incoming phone calls, and service providers can meet consumer demand for Internet use with a new revenue-generating service."

Lucent's Internet Call Waiting solution, which will be available in the third quarter of 1998, also provides a solid foundation for additional services such as unified messaging (which can access both voice mail and e-mail), call detail information (including caller ID-type services) and user-defined flexible call treatment. The solution is compatible with existing customer networks and scalable for new customers.

As a future enhancement, Lucent plans to provide consumers with the option of accepting a voice call using voice over the Internet technology. With this enhancement, people will have the ability to answer a call and conduct a conversation while maintaining the Internet connection.

"Our Internet Call Waiting solution is the first of Lucent's intelligent network family of Internet services," added Holmes. "Our suite of Internet offers will enable service providers to leverage Lucent's intelligent networking expertise in wireless and wireline networks and introduce new and innovative services to meet growing consumer demands."

Lucent offers a wide range of intelligent network solutions that allow service providers to offer wireless, wireline and Internet services to consumers. Lucent's wireless software solutions allow consumers to take advantage of services such as prepaid cellular, and sending and receiving short messages from other callers. The solutions allow consumers to keep their local phone number even if they change local phone companies, as well as provide consumers new features such as voice-activated dialing.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronic components.
