What does all that matter? Its not about technology, its about marketing!

Who evangelized it? Invested in it? Profited from it?

Did McDonalds invent the hambuger?
Did Ford invent the car?
Did IBM invent the Computer?

Hal,
Your first post was interesting, but your repetitive use of the "Citizen Gates" pejorative title is quite tiring. I may have mistaken you for someone trying to be impartial.
Mike

>>I sometimes wonder how many people who post here know that Bill Gates did not invent the personal computer, did not invent DOS, did not invent the mouse, did not invent the Windows type operating system, did not invent the browser ... etc. I wonder how many people know the true history of Microsoft? I know I don't. I wonder what the DOJ thinks it knows.<<

As someone aptly pointed out, and people tend to forget, Microsoft is a marketing company. It doesn't matter so much WHO invented, but whether or not it gets marketed properly. McDonalds did not invent the hamburger, but they sure knew how to market it. And why is it that a bottle of Tylenol costs 85 cents to make yet consumer pay over $6 at the check out counter for it? And if Apple was so good and Windows was so bad, why did everyone buy Windows?

Microsoft is first and foremost a marketing company and a damn good one! It helps that they have great products, however they acquired them, to market.

You are wrong. Apple did not pay Xerox for carrying their ideas forward. Apple sued Microsoft and lost. I do know the actual history of Microsoft, and it doesn't prevent me from recognizing the real value that Microsoft and Gates has added to our information age. So what if Gates didn't invent the personal computer? So what if he didn't write DOS? Do you actually believe that Marc Andreesen was a whiz kid who wrote Navigator or that Java is open? If so, you may be interested in a bridge or some quite valuable swampland.
