Ann
You make some very interesting points. It is also my desire to have a personal relationship with god, outside of organized religion.
The interesting concept is this, what do you think would happen if we dropped organized religion tomorrow?
There will always be people who seek the fellowship of others who believe similarly to themselves. That is human nature. There are also always going to be intelligent, insightful, charismatic people who will draw others to their own ideals. I think organized religion would spring back up quicker than you could blink an eye. That said, I dont think organized religion is the problem, but the intolerance of some who follow it. The key is to eradicate intolerance and hatred.

How can we do that? I dont really know. I think one way is through increased communiction, and knowledge of othere peoples cultures and viewpoints. The world wide web, can actually be a great vehicle for this. There are assuredly other ways to wipe out intolerance and hatred. Does anyone out there care to contribute any of their ideas on how to do this?

Mark

Ann, your position is understandable and I certainly respect it having came from much the same way of thinking as you have at this particular point of your journey through life. I get excited and have a feeling that there are those still among us like you who are open minded and searching for spiritual identity.
Statement of fact: we are creatures of our environment and genetic inheritance. Lets face it. Some (such as you and me attemp to break out of our impressions that were stamped upon us from parents and we discover that the impressions can be quite indelible and difficult to break.
Maybe, truth be known, after breaking from my childhood taught religion that I re-acquired some teachings that unknowingly, I was unable to overcome. So I was not re-learning a completely new spiritual path but falling back into old teachings. I do know this. I see God in a new light as I no longer have a guilt ridden faith and follow man-made religion and customs.
I like my self today and am able to forgive my past because God's spirit has enabled me to see Him from a new perspective. I am a fallable human that is prone to making many mistakes but today I do follow the philosophy of live and let live. I simply want others to find what I struggled so hard to find. Peace and serenity.
God help you in your quest for new understanding and if you do not change than you are not making progress. I have found that we cannot reach a point and then keep what we have gained without continuous effort to acquire deeper spiritual understanding. And as we grow, we do discover new spiritual identities.
The paths beaten out by other true spiritual seekers is the easiest to follow.
Thanks for your reply.
