This is correct. The hardware discussion today revealed that they are moving away from ROM because of the latency issues. The iMac was said to only have a 512K boot-rom, as opposed to the normal 4MB Mac OS ROM that has been around since the Q800.

In layman's terms, they are moving away from ROM because it was affecting the speed of "Real-time" processes, like video capture. It was also hard to upgrade.
