Captain Kirk- In re: DDT --From what I can determine the persistent
and powerful pesticide DDT is banned in only 49 countries presently.
Third world countries continue its use. "South American, Asian and
African countries continue to use DDT, contributing to global con-
tamination." It is still widely used in Mexico which agreed in 1996/7
to phase out DDT production and application within 10 years. DDT
was banned in the USA in 1972.

Ps. This discussion today on Mexican produce and the like has been
most informative. Henceforth, our household shall be inclined to
purchase only US produce and other foodstuffs whenever possible.
