Paul, add one more to the list (Systems companies supporting Merced, with Solaris this time). biz.yahoo.com ====================================================================== Tuesday May 12, 8:33 am Eastern Time Company Press Release Amdahl to Support Solaris on Intel Architecture Following the lead of Fujitsu, Amdahl announces plans for Solaris on Intel SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 1998-- Amdahl Corporation today announced its intention to support the Solaris(R) operating environment with an Intel(R)-based platform. This follows in the wake of a recent announcement by Amdahl's parent company, Fujitsu(R) Limited, stating that it will be making the first shipments of Fujitsu servers running the Intel version of Solaris beginning the second half of 1998. Amdahl's time frame for its Intel-based Solaris servers has a target focusing on the introduction and use of Intel's new 64-bit Merced CPU chips in 1999. Amdahl will use the Fujitsu teamserver(tm) which it has added to its product line as the base platform that will ultimately utilize Intel's Merced CPU chips. The teamserver is the first leg of a new Amdahl strategy to provide a 'Universal Server' -- one server that can support different operating systems. In 1999, with Intel's Merced chip integrated into teamserver, Amdahl will provide Windows NT(R) and Solaris support in a single hardware platform. Amdahl has been a long-term driver of UNIX(R) in the enterprise both as a Sun(R) reseller for five years and with UTS(R) , Amdahl's own mainframe-based UNIX. UTS products have been used by major customers since 1982. Adding an Intel-based implementation of UNIX is a natural extension to the Amdahl strategy, presenting a powerful common hardware platform for both Windows NT and UNIX. ''Often, users that change or add applications must also change operating systems. This may entail changing their hardware platforms, as well,'' said Ali Jenab, vice president, Systems Marketing, Amdahl Corporation. ''With teamserver supporting both NT and Solaris, it will offer maximum flexibility and free the customer from the need to change hardware platforms. This will greatly expand the utility of the hardware and protect customer's investments in it.'' ''Further, this will allow our customers who have a UNIX need to satisfy it on SPARC(R), Intel or S/390 architecture hardware,'' said Jenab. ''It also provides an enhanced migration path with full system interoperability backed by Amdahl's industry-leading service organization.'' ====================================================================== Tony
