its a scam, one thing about history is let them play because we are building a bubble. the fact is amat pre announced . they missed the street by 7 cents next quarter. they will put a good spin on the numbers. amat got it made because they don't pre announce like the rest of walll street they just back door and wall street falls for it. i'm not worried about my short at all. we are at just at the beginning of the downcycle.

OT: DELL
FWIW, I believe there is some research going on at Dell. They design their own motherboards, and I think they're working on bus architecture implementation, etc. It's not research on the caliber of INTC or AMAT, but it's a little more than plugging OEM parts together. (Although there's plenty of that as well, to be sure.)

Anyway, the work that they do on implementing new features, standards, protocols, etc. into their motherboards probably does give them a bit of an advantage over the places that just plug-n-chug. Is it worth a PE of 70? I'd have to agree that it's probably not.

This was just off the top of my head. :-) Feel free to pick it apart.

Offsubject on Dell

>Everybody knows that DELL is way overvalued at the current
>price, but it keeps going up. There is no way one can compare
>DELL to GE, INTC or MSFT, it is just a commodity box maker
>without any research. It is just defying logic how a commodity
>box maker can deserve a PE of 70.

I agree that Dell is overpriced, but disagree about their not having any research. Dell has the lowest supply inventory in the business. They claim they turn over their inventory every seven days. Here is a quote from the new president of Micron Electronics, comparing his company to them,

IBD:
What are your goals for turning over your inventory?
Kocher:
We're not currently in a position to target what Dell's doing.
They're leading the pack, and they've done a great job executing,
but it took them a decade to get there. On the other hand,
I think it's entirely reasonable for us to target the midteens
in terms of days. We're making progress toward that goal.

This sure sounds like Dell has an unfair advantage over it's competitors in the manufacturing area. Whether that advantage is worth a PE of 70 is debatable point. (I own MUIE myself.)

Smart, not everybody is aware of this ["Dell is way overvalued"]. In fact, I'm one of those dummies that isn't. But if you are as Smart as your name implies, perhaps you can show me another company with a return on assets of 28%, a return on equity in excess of 80%, and an asset turnover in excess of 4x.

Maybe I'm not as Smart <VBG> as you, but from where I sit Dell looks like its head and shoulders ahead of the pack.

TTFN,
