Very curious - how did your niece and nephew turn out?

I had a sister-in-law who took in a couple of foster children, even though she had five of her own. One of them used to play with toy soldiers all the time, smashing them into each other. He was completely involved in his imaginary play, oblivious to the family celebration of Christmas or other holiday that was going on around him.

As for my sister-in-law, she was not exactly normal. She treated one of her children really badly, punishing him far more than the other four. Her favorite first level punishment was denying desert to the "bad" child, and second level, denying supper altogether. My mother-in-law said she abused the foster child who played with the toy soldiers, but that at least she didn't abuse her own son.

When her son left home at 18, he left for good. The only time I have seen him was at his grandmother's funeral.

Now that is really sick... abusing real people instead of dolls.
