Mohan, Well, I know of one person who thought that the NASA mission to land the rover on Mars last summer was a fake, since he believed that we colonized Mars a long time ago. Thinking that Senators Shelby and Biden and the other 98 of them are just doing a TV skit to fool us is a little farfetched. No, this is not a piece of theater to disinform us. CIA is probably very worried about Senator Shelby's ire, and budget cuts. I think that Indians have a lot to be proud of, in no particular order: 1) India has not violated its international agreements--it never signed the NPT or CTBT. 2) a working H device was not only developed, but the existence of the project was kept secret from the rest of the world. 3) the tests released no radiation to the atmosphere. Note I said H device, not H bomb. First they had to make sure that they have the concept right, and the materials right, and everything arranged just so. Then, more work is involved in "weaponizing" this arrangement so that it could be dropped from an airplane as a bomb. After that work is done, they might want to do another test because the "arranged just so" is so essential. Making it into a bomb is much easier than fitting it into the warhead of a ballistic missile for two reasons: a bomb can be made much larger and heavier, and a bomb is subject to much less extreme environments (g-forces and vibration) during delivery. Finally, due to the many technical challenges, I want to say that this project has without doubt been years in the making, meaning that it predated the current ruling party. Great credit is due to all the Indian politicians, scientists, and engineers who were able to maintain complete secrecy for all that time. I personally believe that the possession of H bombs by nations such as India could be very stabilizing--likely to deter, rather than encourage, warmongering. David
