D-Day Looms for Redmond

wired.com

Federal and state regulators are expected to announce antitrust action against the company on Thursday, one day before it is scheduled to ship its Windows 98 operating system software.

The move is expected to be announced at a joint news conference in Washington, DC, with US Attorney General Janet Reno, US Assistant Attorney General Joel Klein, and a few state attorneys general from the 19 or more involved, a source close to the case said.
-------

I wonder if Janet Reno will be bringing A1-Abrams tanks.

re I would still probably choose Office, because I happen to like it -- but I would rather have several vendors to choose from than only one

Ironically, I am very much against this lawsuit farce, and I don't use Office, because I do have a choice, and you do to. I use Corel WordPerfect Suite 7, and I love it and always have.

To try to claim you don't have a choice is simply untrue (unless you're incredibly ignorant).

Your theory is funny !! The reason that MSFT OS had 85% market is because it
offers the best performance/price on it products. Think about that Apple came out the product of window operating system first, and the reason it failed is because its pricing policy, the same to IBM. If MSFT has 85% of the market, it means that the consumers still have a choice besides MSFT. If the other competitors of the 15% wants
to compete , they have to improve their performance / price , then their market will grow. If your theory of monopoly hold, then it means we penalize the success , and kill free competition and free market. If your theory hold, then it means you can suit your boss, because he is too successful comparing with you, and he should be penalized because of being successful.
As to the break up of MSFT, well , let's say MSFT was broken up to be ten different
companies and each comes up with different OS. Can you imagine what will happen if there are 10 different PC OS softwares in the market ? It means those independent
software development companies will have to develop ten different version of the
same product for different OS softwares, it will immediately cause a manpower problem for those software companies. Besides that, think about that the data in your spread sheet on OS "A" may not work on a PC with OS "B", then it will have immediate problem for you to send e-mail from your PC to another PC which has different OS, because the file you send to can not be display with another PC with different OS .
