Several illnesses from west coast fruit juice? We had scores of cases of illnesses here in Wisconsin within the last two years from Mexican berries purchased by school districts. Tons of the stuff was dumped. There were hundreds of cases of sickness traced back to Mexican cantaloupe during Clinton's first term. Mexican fruits and vegetables are a problem and the only function the USDA seems to have at the boarder with regards to inspecting the stuff is to insure that each container has the weight and content stated on its label and that it is not packaged in a box stamped "USDA"--the stuff often gets switched once through customs to USDA boxes anyway.

Contaminated meat is another matter. We all know what Clinton let Tyson dump in the Arkansas rivers. (Hint: it wasn't Holyfield's ear.) Personally I'm a vegetarian. Our farmers would be shut down if they did what's being done south of the border. I don't think it's simplistic to call for a level playing field, NAFTA or not. --AG

re: bad food

Is it not a help to rinse the veggies in a mild solution of bleach. The danger is bacteria if I understand right, and won't a small
percent of bleach dip help provide SOME safety?
