I thought that as people became the least bit sophisticated about using the internet, they
would move to a cheaper provider who would treat them with some dignity. Didn't
happen. I don't know whether it is because people loved the content so much that they
wouldn't give it up or because of the inertia that must be overcome to make a change.

Walter,

Analysts claim it is the content. I believe that many people that have been on the net for a long time still know very little about how it works or how their computer works. AOL gives them a disk and it installs the software. Getting online is going step by step.

I have six ISP accounts. Don't laugh at me folks. I only pay for two. My first computer was a Mac and I under them well. Most local ISPs can help people get online with Windows but cannot answer Mac questions. I offer to help the Mac people that are customers of these ISPs as a community service and the ISps give me free accounts. My point is the Mac users signing up for AOL do not need help.

AMZN may be counting on the fact that once people order from them and set a bookmark, they
just won't find out about the other sites. Getting books from AMZN is good enough and why look
for something else. Never underestimate the power of inertia among people who have other uses
for their time. I am a perfect example in regard to the telephone company. I don't ever feel like
taking the time to figure out which long distance calling plan might be cheapest, and I don't
make very many calls. It's not worth my time and effort to even think about it, so I stay with
what brung me.

This phenomena is quite common! This is why AOL is still my ISP and I still order books from AMZN. I check barnes and noble now though. Maybe its because i am short AMZN :-)
