From Sony's earnings release.

Sony will start the digital TV era here with direct-view TVs this fall, and it will soon follow with projection models and set-top adapters for conventional TVs, it was indicated.

And while Sony is counting heavily on sales of DVD players -- as well as DVD software from its Sony Pictures unit -- it will not be joining in this year's launch of Divx, Aoki said. Though he's not opposed to Divx as such, Aoki indicated there was some concern that it might cause a level of consumer confusion at this early stage of DVD sales. "Once DVD is established, maybe many variations can come into the market," but right now is the time "to concentrate on selling standard DVD players."

As for the longer term, Aoki said Sony is in a unique position in terms of being an entertainment company, having the technology and manufacturing capability for producing all types of home, broadcasting, cable and wireless transmission and receiving equipment, and a vast variety of software programming and packages. One of his key tasks, he said, will be working with Sony Music and Sony Pictures to develop a coordinated approach to the convergence of audio/video with information technology to enable the company to best exploit the opportunities that will be offered through the expanding digital networks.
