A turbodiesel is far more efficient than an electric car. The nice thing about a modern direct-injection turbodiesel is that it could be run off vegetable oil. When biofuel prices become competitive (probably thru a combination of crop engineering and a tiered carbon tax) the turbodiesel will be King of the Road. Sure, that pesky electric with the thousand-pound batt pack will trounce me at the stoplight, but I'll go from San Fran to Ely, NV without a fuel break. That's over some hilly terrain.
Until electric storage means a 200-pound five-passenger car has a 400-mile range in tough terrain - internal combustion has much to recommend it.

Del, the whole ugly situation in Indian and Pakistan this week reminds me of another reason for the entire world to renounce nuclear energy altogether. I would happily walk everywhere and live by candlelight to avoid being in a nuclear war, and it is obvious that proliferation continues. This is one genie I wish we could put back in the bottle!!
