I find it very peculiar that the rest of the world powers is unwilling to recognize India as a power. They still are mistakenly hooked on to the per-capita income as a barometer of success. Even prominent economists have discarded the notion of success based on some notional income. The real skill India now demonstrated is not the nuclear devices exploded. This was obvious to many Indians; it is ironic that the rest of the world believed otherwise. The real skill India demonstrated now is she too, like other powers, has learnt (at huge cost to her security) and is ready for "gunboat diplomacy" and that * an Indian Prime Minister (Mrs. Gandhi) does not have to wait 4 hours (beyond the scheduled time) to meet another country's head of state (Mr. Nixon), * an Indian Prime Minister's (Mr. Nehru's) genuine calls for non-alignment can no longer go unheeded and other countries (such as China and Pakistan) will have to think ten times before breaking an agreement to not initiate a war against India, * the Indian policy of total nuclear disarmament be taken seriously by ALL that have the nuclear power, * the rest of the world (especially the US) stops comparing India with Pakistan, which by the way was India before the British engineered a break up, * Indians be accounted for whatever they stand for based on merits, not on how they look and talk. It is odd to observe the way US government deals with an Indian Head of state and the media almost completely ignores the event. Even the so called hawks for democratic movement forget the largest show of democratic values and power on earth. * Indian policy makers know better than the "outside experts" what is better for India. The rest of the world should be a little better educated than they are on double standards. They should read Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy: "follow what I do not what I say." Many Indian Muslims and Christians (among other religious groups) have recognized that they were forced to abandon their earlier religion and that despite religious affiliations (current or past), they are first Indians bonded by the ancient Indian philosophy which was so nicely written by Salmon Rusdie in a Time article (August 15, 1997). One of the most widely recognized and sung Oriya hymns for Lord Jagannath was written by a Muslim devotee of the Lord. I am not surprised that Indian Muslims and other religious groups have made enormous contribution to the Indian philosophy/spirituality, which the Western world is unfortunately mixing up with Hinduism.
