I believe that you are referring to Sun Tzu (there are many english spellings) who wrote a manuscript on the Art of War.

One of his many memorable sayings (that I really like... and paraphrased, of course):

Don't worry about your beard if you are about to lose your head.

I know of him, but it wasn't me that posted.
