<< I'm not sure that gun boat diplomacy is one of them.>>

You have misunderstood the practice of gunboat diplomacy by the western powers. India was a victim of that. Now India can better defend herself diplomatically while protecting her boarders against unwarranted aggression.

<< "the world must now take India seriously because we can beat you up" >>

Again, you have misunderstood the Indian policy interest. It is not that "we will beat you up" and so take us seriously. It is that "we will not allow ourselves beaten up" and so stop unwarranted intimidation. India has learnt through hard ways to be strong so that she will have lower chances of being beaten up.

Why is the US looking the other way when China continues to provide Pakistan with Nuclear technology? China's MFN status should be used as a threat instead of asking India to sit back.

India did not have a choice but to do what they did. The heck with sanctions. It cannot sit back and watch Pakistan and China go about business as usual.

India's Nuclear compulsions.

Lee:

The way I see it there are 3 factors that lead to India's decision to go nuclear.

1)National security:

China:

India waited 24 years since her first nuclear test in 1974 before going ahead with the recent tests. The first one was provoked by China's attack on India in 1962 and India was caught quite unprepared. There were anecdotal evidence at the time that many Indian soldiers were fighting the Chinese without even having the basic equipment or clothes,it was reported many soldiers had to fight even without shoes in sub-zero temperatures in the Himalayan mountains and many perished due to these severe harsh conditions.

During this 24 years China has built up a formidable military force, nuclear and all,and presents a threat to India as evidenced by the past and even now they hold Indian territories they confiscated in the 1962 war, particularly in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.

They also have nuclear missiles planted in Tibet pointed at the heart of India.

Pakistan:

India was attacked 3 times by Pakistan and now there is ample evidence they have acquired missile technology from the Chinese. And the Chinese are also providing them with nuclear technology. In spite of all the treatise and non proliferation agreements and everything else, the West particularly the U.S has done nothing to stop this even though there was plenty of evidence.

So you see India is surrounded by unfriendly and hostile countries and they are arming themselves to the teeth and this is reason enough for India to go ahead with its nuclear program.

2.Domestic political compulsions.

The Indians feel that they have been exploited and ran over by other countries for thousands of years and the feeling of the masses is that the country is not doing enough to protect itself from potential threats from its not so friendly neighbors and others. Also there is a consensus within the country that India is not considered or taken seriously by the world is spite of the size of its population, its democracy and other aspects and the people feel that this is because India is not a strong country both economically and militarily. This is evidenced by the fact that she has been repeatedly refused a seat seat in the U.N security council while much smaller countries representing a much smaller population of the world (with the exception of China) are calling the shots on the count of they are nuclear powers and have a bit more money in the bank.So you see the
people in India feel what matters in world politics is military power and money and not anything else.

3.Power = Influence

Indians feel quite strongly the world is influenced by Power and not morality or ethics or principles or logic or any such nonsense,it is all about money and pure military strength and as such they feel they are justified to take any necessary steps to change their current status as a non-violent,non aggressive, poor and helpless country at the mercy and whims of the others whose fate will be decided by some guys with a big bank account and an Uzi.
