HP's embedded virtual machine, with its small footprint, soft real-time features and custom configurability, ...

"Soft real-time features" of HP's JVM brought into hard real-time OS will, probably, reduce it to a soft real-time OS. Could it be the reason why WRS is hesitant to licence HP's JVM?

License negotiations are underway, and WIND may be in a better position than the other RTOS vendors because HP's JVM already runs on VxWorks...

While Intel and Wind River have not signed licensing deals, the endorsement means that the companies are interested in the technology and that negotiations are underway. "There are different time frames," he said. In addition, HP is negotiating with a number of manufacturers who use proprietary versions of RTOSes.

Under the new licenses, the four RTOS vendors will port HP's JVM to their respective offerings: Integrated Systems' pSOSystem, Lynx's LynxOS, Microware's OS-9 and QNX's QNX OS.

HP's embedded JVM currently runs on top of the VxWorks real-time operating system from Wind River.

Here's the full explanation for WIND's absence from the list of companies licensing the HWP Java-based Embedded Virtual Machine.

From the May 18 issue of Infoworld: "HP has also received endorsements from Wind River Systems and Intel, vendors excluded from licensing HP's solution due to previous licensing deals with Sun."
