The current world reaction is short-term and will have no impact on the long-term benefits that Indians will derive from the indigenously developed nuclear power.

I have already noticed a vast change in the US elementary school curricula even before these tests. India is no longer depicted as a country filled with snake-charmers and agrarian people living in abject poverty.

The western cameras have rarely rolled over the Calcutta skyline when they covered Mother Teresa, because most in the West are not accustomed to seeing the Indian skyline. But, when Peter Jennings was covering Mother Teresa's funeral, the camera had to roll over the beautiful landscape of Calcutta's Central Garden and the skyline. Peter had to willy-nilly comment that Calcutta was not as bad as had been depicted.

Now, the elementary school curricula will change to include India as a nuclear power and that Indians built it on their own. TV stations have already been covering the event. This event will educate non-Indians, especially in the western society that India is not filled with snake charmers and villagers with nothing to eat.

Some of the friends of my children often give an impression that the Indian children even in the US are not well-fed, despite the fact that the average income of Indian American families is the highest in the US. I do not want to talk about the achievements of Indian children in prestigious Westinghouse Science Talent Search, etc. because it is all known to the audience here.

Restoring the perception about Indians to their deserving status has an immense long-term economic value for India and Indians that most myopic political forecasters cannot comprehend.
