Stitch, regarding error rates: soft (correctable) error rates are
measured extensively, but kept secret. They are transparent to the user, because these errors are corrected before he "sees" the data.
Hard error rates are often extrapolated from stress tests or are
simulated by using complicated models. The user only knows that
hard error rates are guaranteed to be better than 1/10^13 bits
or so.

I agree, there is no basis for comparing different DD products
there. The above is intended for others, less knowledgeable
than you.

Actually, no it is not confusing. It is relatively easy to seperate wheat from chaff. Problem is there is so damn much chaff.
