p.s. Also the traditional SEs have very low overhead compared to someone like Microsoft. They have their server engineering, and administrative type stuff like ad sales, marketing and M&A. No real manufacturing or anything like that. The SEs usually co-brand to lower overhead.

My local telephone company is Southern Bell. I have an extra line that I use for internet access (through AOL) and faxes. This extra line is charged the same rate as my regular local line. However it seams that somewhere in the northeast the phone company charges a little extra for phone lines that connect to the internet (regardless that it's a local call). Media One will be offering internet access through cable by the end of the year in my neighborhood.
On the Start subject, yes they will be a formidable competitor indeed. They've been piling up content for a long time now. The seek partnership with Microsoft browser came from their last quarterly report. Under the International Partners section.

> International Partners
>Infoseek expanded its global reach during the quarter by reaching
>agreement on plans to form a joint venture in Germany with Deutsche Telekom's
>online service, Europe's largest Internet access provider; Axel Springer
>Verlag, Germany's largest consumer media company; and Holtzbrinck, Germany's
>premiere financial publisher. The joint venture will result in the launch of
>a German language Infoseek branded search, navigation and content service
>localized to serve the largest population of Internet users in Europe.
>Infoseek extended its partnership with Microsoft in the U.K. with an
>agreement that integrates the localized version of Infoseek.com directly into
>Internet Explorer 4.0, which is rapidly gaining market share to become the
>number one browser.
