Probably very old, 10 or 20 years (or more). The drug currently is indicated for fairly rare uses such as treatment and diagnosis of catecholamine secreting tumors and treatment of inadvertent injection into a finger etc of a local anesthetic containing epinephrine (which causes vasoconstriction and can cause loss of the digit).

Linda, Copied this from PDR 1982 Regitine (phentolamine USP)-Ciba-Then supplied as 50mg tablet or vials of 5mg for injection.

Indications were for prevention or control of hypertensive episodes that may occur in a patient with pheochromocytoma as a result of stress or manipulation during preoperative preparation and surgical incision.

Contraindications-Myocardial infarction, history of myocardial infarction, coronary insufficiency, angina, or other evidence suggestive of coronary artery disease. Hypersensitivity to phentolamine and other related compounds. (It seems to me this would exclude the majority of people that have ED because of vascular problems.)

Warnings: Myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular spasm, and cerebrovascular occlusion have been reported to occur following the administration of phentolamine, usually associated with marked hypotensive episodes with shock-like states which occasionally follow parenteral (IV) administration.

**Correction it doesn't say IV but only parenteral which means : situated or occurring outside the intestine <parúenúterúal drug administration by intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous injection>; especially : introduced otherwise than by way of the intestines

Precautions-Tachycardia and cardiac arrythymias may occur with the use of Regitine or other alpha-adrenergic blocking agents. When possible, defer administration of cardiac glycosides until cardiac rhythm returns to normal.

Adverse reactions-Acute and prolonged hypotensive episodes, tachycardia, and cardiac arrythmias have been reported, most frequently after parenteral administration. In addition, weakness, dizziness, flushing, orthostatic hypotension, nasal stuffiness, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur.

usual dosage-50mg 4 to 6 times a day

Gee, I wonder why they gave people test doses? Assuming Viagra and Vasomax were both out right now. If you had a choice between blue vision (Viagra) and this list, which one would you pick?
