They're probably right, since angiogenesis requires matrix breakdown, which in turn is catalyzed by MMPs. What's interesting is that the interstitial matrix has a lot of collagen (XVIII is the precursor of endostatin), and some MMPs get activated by plasmin (plasminogen, the zymogen, is the precursor of angiostatin). Could there be a link here? Could AS/ES act along the same pathway as MMPIs?
As of the MMP crystal structure, I thought Agouron was doing everything based on that. I guess I was wrong. Thanks for the clarifications. I am interested in the detail, even if it's chemistry and I'm just a doc.
