In practical terms, you have until 4PM on the third Friday of Aug. Anything else, (like you getting 'assigned' for someone would wants to exercise their contracts) is in the league with being hit by a comet..

Not so. I've been hit by many comets prior to expiry, and there's nothing like getting that wake-up call -- especially if the position was previously hedged. Of course, covered call assignment is relatively benign (other than watching your neighbors continue to profit).

As an example, take a look at the May 85 calls. These are subject to assignment at any time. To make it interesting, trader x has the following position:
** Short 200 Dell May 65 Calls
** Long 200 Dell May 85 Calls
Now, if trader x's short options are called, guess what is likely to happen? If you wrote the May 85s, your phone just might ring.
