<A> Analog Devices Chipset Enables Newbridge Networks End-to-End ADSL Solution

NORWOOD, Mass. -- Analog Devices Inc. (NYSE: ADI) (ADI) today announced that Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC), a leading manufacturer of telecom networking solutions, is using ADI's AD20msp910 ADSL chipset to build high-density digital subscriber line capability into the MainStreetXpress(TM) 36170 Multiservices Switch and MainStreetXpress 27020 ADSL modem.

ADI's chipset enables Newbridge to offer end-to-end ADSL solutions to telephone companies and equipment manufacturers allowing them, in turn, to meet exploding end-user demand for managed broadband services to remote teleworkers and SOHO users.

"The selection by Newbridge of ADI's T1.413 Issue II-compliant AD20msp910 chipset is further evidence that we are leading the way in deploying ADSL technology today," said Russ Johnsen, vice president and general manager of ADI's Communications Division. "Newbridge currently has the largest installed base of DSL network termination units, more than 350,000 lines.
With the latest addition to its DSL solution family, ADSL integrated in the MainStreetXpress 36170, customers will be able to extend the reach of carrier managed broadband services."

"The ADI chipset gives us state-of-the-art signal processing based on the latest T1.413 Issue II specifications," said Les Kovacs, Director of DSL Business Development, Broadband Access. Newbridge's MainStreetXpress(TM) engineering manager. "This ensures that Newbridge ATM switches and CPE are fully compliant with interoperability standards defined by the American National Standards Institute, recognized by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI TR238) and in process by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU G.dmt)."

Analog Devices' AD20msp910 enables Newbridge to bring a true standards-based solution to market quickly at a price point that end-users can afford. And it virtually guarantees seamless interoperability within the telecom network. Using Newbridge products, telephone companies and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can now deliver on the promise of ADSL technology, which converts ordinary copper telephone wires into long-awaited multimedia communication "pipelines."

The AD20msp910 has the capability to push the speed of data transmission over existing copper to 8 Mbps -- 60 times faster than ISDN and nearly 150 times faster than V.90 kbps voice-band modems. The MultiService ATM switch supports more than 1,500 ADSL lines and is scalable up to 40,000 lines. The CPE modem provides all protocol conversion, ATM adaptation, control and Internet working software to receive ADSL services.

The AD20msp910 chipset combines all the functions and essential software required to implement a complete ADSL solution. It is a five-device chipset that integrates a DMT co-processor, analog front end, line driver, DSP-based host processor and interface/framer and is bundled with data pump firmware and additional software to provide a full protocol stack for data control and management. Analog Devices offers complete reference designs, software support, training, and technical support from applications teams throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.

From The Fool Boards:
ÿSubject: message from Aware
Author: tmfdotcomÿÿÿ Date: 5/13/98 2:18:12 PM (ET)
Hi Paul,
Jim Bender was brought into the company three years ago as a turnaround
specialist. He did a great job bringing the company public and putting
into
place a strong management team; but we have now entered a new phase in
our
growth. As Aware's customer base becomes increasingly technical, the
most
effective way for us to address the needs of our customers and to more
effectively focus the company on its technology and products is to move
Michael Tzannes into the most senior role here. Michael has been with
the
company for 7 1/2 years, and his skill sets combine the technological
vision
and sales and marketing expertise needed for this role. This is a change
that has been planned for some time, and the Board and all of Aware's
senior
management, including Jim, agree that this is the best solution for the
company.
In response to your second question, it's important to note that any CAP
products or deployments will be very short-term solutions. I think you
need
to look at the overall DSL landscape. DMT has now emerged as the only
viable solution that can ensure long-term, widespread interoperability.
There are only a handful of vendors in the world who are DMT-oriented,
and
among these four, Aware is extremely well-positioned. Aware is the only
pure core technology company capable of widely proliferating its
technology.
Aware is not exclusive with any silicon provider, nor does the company
compete with its would-be customers. Moreover, Aware was the first to
demonstrate splitterless DMT. We are the furthest ahead and we have
patents
pending on the technology. With the aggressive time to market
requirements
established by the UAWG (spearheaded by Compaq, Intel and Microsoft), it
makes sense for anyone who wants to incorporate DSL Lite into their
product
or service offering to partner with Aware.
Hope to see you at Supercomm. Booth #9153
