FORE Systems ATM Switches Honored by Networking Industry
ForeRunner(R) ASX-1000 ATM Backbone Switch Wins Data Communications Magazine Tester's Choice & Network Computing's Well-Connected Awards; ForeRunner(R) ASX-4000 Wins Current Analysis RadioActive Award
PITTSBURGH, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE - news), a global supplier of networking solutions based on an Intelligent Infrastructure(TM), today announced that its ForeRunner(R) ASX-1000 was selected by ''Data Communications Magazine'' as the sole award winner for the Tester's Choice Awards, featured in the May issue of the publication. In addition, the ASX-1000 won ''Network Computing Magazine's'' Well-Connected Award for the Best ATM Switch in an announcement made during the NetWorld+Interop tradeshow last week in Las Vegas. Also at the tradeshow, the company's recently launched ForeRunner(R) ASX-4000 won the Current Analysis RadioActive Award in the Carrier Switching category and was named as a finalist in the Best of Show Award for Network Infrastructure.

''We are extremely pleased that our industry leading ATM switches continue to be recognized, not only by our customers but also by these prestigious industry awards,'' said Ron McKenzie, vice president of strategic marketing at FORE Systems. ''These distinctions confirm that FORE Systems is a winner when it comes to building strategic, reliable and flexible networks that give our customers a competitive advantage.''

The ''Data Communications'' Tester's Choice Award joins a long list of other independent testing organizations, including ''Network Computing,'' ''Network World,'' The Tolly Group and Strategic Networks Consulting, who have affirmed FORE's ASX-1000 as a leading ATM switch in the marketplace. For this award, FORE's ASX-1000 ATM switch outperformed products from several leading competitors.

According to test results published in ''Data Communications,'' ''Net managers searching for the best all-around ATM backbone switch need look no further than the ASX-1000. This device easily grabbed top honors in every test, setting up and tearing down 455 calls per second -- almost three times as fast as the competition. Its margin of victory in the PNNI reconvergence tests was even wider: It rerouted around trouble more than 20 times faster than its closest rival.''

Additionally, the ''ForeRunner'' ASX-1000 also received a Well-Connected Award in the ATM Switch category. The Well-Connected Awards, sponsored by ''Network Computing'' Magazine, were announced on May 5 during NetWorld+Interop in Las Vegas.

The ''ForeRunner'' ASX-4000, the company's next-generation ATM switch solution that can scale to over 100 Gbps, won Current Analysis' RadioActive Award recognition in the Carrier Switching category. Every month, Current Analysis, a market analysis firm based in Sterling, Virginia, awards one vendor a RadioActive Award for what they consider the most important announcement during the prior month. The ASX-4000 was also named as a finalist for NetWorld+Interop's Best of Show award in the Network Infrastructure category.

About ''ForeRunner'' ASX-4000

The ''ForeRunner'' ASX-4000 provides a scalable, reliable, high-speed foundation for building networking solutions that last. The highly scalable and resilient architecture of the ASX-4000 makes it the ideal platform of choice for large enterprise and high-performance desktop networks, and for IP (Internet Protocol) service providers. The switch also boasts up to 40 Gbps of non-blocking switching capacity and is the first switch to market with OC-48c ATM ports. The ASX-4000 will provide the Intelligent Infrastructure that can scale to meet bandwidth demands of mission-critical networks.

About ''ForeRunner'' ASX-1000

The ''ForeRunner'' ASX-1000 provides the only complete solution for migrating existing LANs to new ATM internetworks. Advanced traffic management hardware capabilities, along with the most complete range of ATM LAN and WAN interface types, ensure customers the reliability and fault tolerance necessary in the LAN backbone. In the event of a link failure, the ASX-1000 automatically reroutes all traffic. By implementing an advanced time-space-time architecture, the ASX-1000 provides a fully nonblocking 10 Gbps of bandwidth. This design enables these switches to support the performance and throughput demands of the most demanding networking environment, such as real-time voice and video applications.

Along with the most advanced reliability features of any ATM enterprise switches available today, all components in the ForeRunner ASX-1000 and ASX-4000 are ''hot-swappable.'' This intelligent partitioning capability minimizes downtime during switch maintenance and network expansions, and allows users to upgrade individual components as opposed to the whole system.
