Shane,

I'll throw in my two cents' worth re: your comment:

Does threat of increased government regulation in healthcare,
particularly regulation of providers, not worry you from a
stockholder's perspective?

You may be worried about government regulation as a stockholder, but you should perhaps be more worried about a lack of regulation from the point of view of a patient -- sorry, "client" or "covered life", in managed-care-speak. Understand that attempts to control the high cost of health care have some real negative effects on patients. You don't get access to specialists. You get kicked out of the hospital early and in pain. You don't have choice of physicians. You have to wait.

Government regulation is likely to be faulty, but the alternative may be worse. Unbridled capitalism with only profit as its goal may not be the perfect vehicle for something as important as health care. I work in the field and know.

Jack

Government regulation is a fact of life in healthcare, as in every other business. I certainly worry about it from a practitioner's standpoint, as it usually makes my life more difficult. However, from a stockholder's perspective, I think the question of what effect this will have on the equity markets is far too complex for me to have an informed opinion at this time.
