The IC Insights forecast predicts semiconductor equipment spending of ~$32 billion in 1998, and chip sales of around $147.6 billion. Add in non-equipment capital spending--buildings and DI water plants, for instance--and the numbers probably come out just about right.

According to Bill McClean (president of IC Insights) the $32 billion forecast may be optimistic, especially with the 1Q98 numbers that are now coming out. On the other hand, less capital spending now is a good thing long term, because that means the capacity bubble goes away sooner.
