The problem with HP is that it is the Archer-Daniel-Midland of the technology world. Technologically its great...but many of its high profile product sectors: (PCs, printers particularly) face very strong competition, and margin pressure. There is no particular sector that can really boost the earnings. HP has missed earnings estimates several times since mid-96, and apart from the recent flourish (which will now end)it has not done well compared to most other technology bell-weathers. It doesn't help that it reports late in the earnings cycle either. I got out in the middle (72 to 75)of this last run-up, expecting it to miss earnings again!
