Hitachi Hokkai Semiconductor To Cease Chip Production

TOKYO (Nikkei)-Hitachi Hokkai Semiconductor Ltd. will withdraw from microchip production by March 1999 as part of a reorganization of five Hitachi Ltd. (6501) chip-making subsidiaries that have been hit hard by slumping prices. The revamp of the deficit-ridden chip units will be completed by next spring, company sources said Wednesday.

The Hokkaido-based Hitachi subsidiary currently earns about 10% of its total sales from memory chips. But from next spring, it will instead focus on logic micro-controllers used in personal computers and cameras. The company's chip operations will be transferred to another Hitachi unit in Akita Prefecture.

Hitachi Hokkai aims to cut production costs by 10% by consolidating its plants.

The company has already entered into negotiations with its labor union over the reorganization plan.
