Suresha, I've observed the same thing in re Dell pricing. They refuse to offer even one notebook computer for less than $2,000, while there are scads of top-tier vendors out there offering for less.

Examples

Notebooks, all 12.1" screens, diskette & CD.
Dell, cheapest model:
P200MMX, 32MB Ram, 3.2GB HD, Active matrix TFT, no modem: $2,199
Toshiba:
P200MMX, 32MB Ram, 2.0GB HD, DS screen, 56K modem: $1,499
IBM:
P166MMX, 16MB Ram, 2.1GB HD, DS screen, no modem, $1,399
Fujitsu:
P166MMX, 32MB Ram, 2.0GB HD, HC DSTN scrn, 56K modem, $1,598
Compaq Presario (a.k.a. the Dell notebook killer, IMO:)
P200MMX, 32MB Ram, 2.1GB HD, HCSTN scrn, 56K modem $1,399
P200MMX, 32MB Ram, 2.1GB HD, TFT scrn, 56K modem, $1,699
P233MMX, 32MB Ram, 2.1GB HD, HCSTN scrn, 56K modem, $1,799
P233MMX, 32MB Ram, 3.2GB HD, HCSTN scrn, 56K modem, $1,999
P233MMX, 48MB Ram, 3.2GB HD, TFT scrn, 56K modem, $2,199
Note the system in bold above is the same price as Dell's cheapest, yet the Compaq gives a faster processor and 16MB more ram, with all else being equal, PLUS Compaq throws in a 56K modem, which Dell makes you pay extra for.
