Celeryroot, Anyone can enter SI with the correct URL. However some can be viewed only by members, depending on the exact URL used (several URLs will point to the same post).

This is your post. This URL requires an SI name and password:
Message 4450686
This URL accesses the same post but can be accessed by anyone:
Message 4450686
go_lgnd's links are in the member's only form although he indicates that he is not a member.

If you access SI via techstocks.com, and SI ahsn't already stored your name and password, you can read but not post.. However, if you tried using go_lgnd's links, they would require a name and password (because the URL's used to link were copied from an SI member accessing the post used to copy the URL).

I am a member, but if I haven't given my name and password previously I cannot use go_lgnd's links without giving my name and password.

Here's one of the links in his post:
exchange2000.com
If you are not a member, or if you are a member but have not yet told SI who you are, it requires a name and password.
If a non-member had copied the URL, it would be:
techstocks
or
www2.techstocks
or
www3.techstocks
and the URL world not require a name and password.

My previous example didn't really show what I was trying to show (all of the URLs I posted seem to work, even if you are not a member).
The demo works if the following Yahoo post is used:
post.messages.yahoo.com@m2.yahoo.com

The URL posted by go_lgnd requires a member ID, but the URL I added, does not (I just modified the beginning of the address into a form that non-members would see).

Thus I assumed that go_lgnd was an SI member since he used a URL that would normally only be seen by an SI member.

Anyone know why a non-member would see a URL that required an SI name and password to access?

Celeryroot, I was curious about the go_lgnd posts. I thought that it was odd that someone would chose the go_lgnd handle, but know very little about LGND. It seemed even stranger when the posts began to sound more and more like some of the nay-sayers who regularly post here.

When the LGND at $14 (again) post came out, I was struck by its similarity to the tonyt post on usenet. I assumed that go_lgnd was an SI member, because a few of his posts linked SI with URLs that could only be seen by SI members (when clicked on, a name/pssword window pops up). I knew that URLs seen by non-members would not have this property.

Interestingly, go_lgnd now says that he is not an SI member (even though he uses member specific URLs for links).

The issue really comes down to credibility and intent. Anyone can post on Yahoo and posters can have several handles. Of course any post anywhere should be viewed with caution, but self promoting posts are among the most misleading (thus on Yahoo it's easy for a poster to self promote by using one handle to respond to another). I believe that such tactics are frowned upon on SI and such approaches do tend to mislead unsuspecting readers.

Cerleryroot, Just one more comment on accessing SI and SI membership.
The URL that pops up on a viewed post depends on who is doing the viewing. For instance, some members see a link such as the one referenced at:
www2.techstocks.com and if they want to link the post, they merely use a copy paste function (the URL pasted is automatically linked by SI hotlinks).

Non-members see URLs such as the one that I referenced above and it can be in many forms each of which can be pasted to posts outside of SI (such as Yahoo!) and anyone can view the post via the link. Thus
www4.techstocks.com
www3.techstocks.com
www2.techstocks.com
techstocks.com
can all be used by non members.
However, URLs viewed by members, when posted outside of SI, require a user name and password.

go_lgnd uses member specific URLs to link SI posts to his Yahoo! posts, so a name/password window pops up when the URL is used on Yahoo! That is why I assumed that he was an SI member.
The URL used on Yahoo was in this form:
exchange2000.com which is the same form as some of the URLs linked by SI members who post on this board.

go_lgnd has responded:
messages.yahoo.com@m2.yahoo.com
indicating that although he is not an SI member, he is on the free trial, so it looks like he is a member.

I was a charter member and when I view posts they begin with talk.techstocks.com or if I access as a non member the posts begin with techstocks.com

go_lgnd (and some other regular posters) put up links that begin with exchange2000.com (see:
techstocks.com )

Any free trial members care to post what they see in the URL window?

I had predicted that LGND would be receiving more coverage, but it looks like I may have already missed one.
Our famous naysayer has discovered coverage by Legg Manson. I searched SI and came up with two posts:

techstocks.com

techstocks.com
I tried to find info in Yahoo, and only go_lgnd seems to know about
this new coverage by Legg Manson:

messages.yahoo.com@m2.yahoo.com
