But wouldn't consumers be confused and frustrated by having four or five operating systems. Doesn't the economy benefit from having a universalÿ operating system standard? Isn't that why Microsoft won the operating system war?

There's an economic concept called "revealed preference". What people want is different from what they say they want. People claim they want "choice", but what they really want is to be able to walk into a software store, buy a piece of software and not have to worry about whether it will work with their computer. Similarly, they want to be able to buy a computer knowing that it will run all that software. Microsoft is in the compatibility business - that's what they sell, and that's what people want.
