"And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10: And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not
forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. " Matt. 3

The Lord is revealing in these verses that God can create men and He can create sons of the flesh for Abraham, but He cannot create sons of the spirit. A son of the spirit must come to God and worhip and love Him voluntarily. This is what Jesus is all about. Our voluntary acceptance of Jesus and worhip of Father , Son and Holy Spirit makes us the sons of the Spirit of God.
God had given John discerning of spirits and he could tell that these Jews were sons of the flesh but that they lacked the faith of Abraham.

Jesus's death and Resurrection has divided for all time mankind into the sons of the flesh and the sons of the spirit. Our faith in Jesus reveals who we are. When we accepts Christ, God adopts us as the children of God and we become part of the family of God. This is why God calls us in the Epistle of Peter: " a royal priesthood" and a "holy nation". We are royalty in the house of God.
Under the New Covenant there are only sons of the flesh and sons of God. The distinction of Jews and Gentiles has been dead for two thousand years except in the carnal and fleshly heart of Talmudic Judaism. These sons of the flesh are still echoing the Jews who approached John the Baptist two thousand years ago and demanding royal treatment for claiming to be the seed of Abraham. The mysteries of the Kingdom of God are hidden to the "veiled hearts" because they reject the Son of Light/
