Katherine: Let's get definitions straight.

SEMI numbers are sales by equipment companies, as reported by equipment companies. Equipment only represents roughly 75% of the total capital spending figure. The remaining 25% is land, building, facilitization, clean room, capitalized comupter equipment, etc. etc. Therefore, capital spending in the high 30's-low 40's for 1997 is right.

WSTS is the sales of chips AS REPORTED BY CHIP COMPANIES, just like the sales numbers from SEMI. Since not all companies report to WSTS, this number understates the market a little bit (as is the case with SEMI numbers, too).
