French Court Rejects Iomega's Motion to Halt SyQuest Product Distribution

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 13, 1998--SyQuest Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:SYQT - news), a leading manufacturer of removable cartridge hard drives, today announced that the Court of First Instance of Paris, France, has rejected a motion filed in March by competitor Iomega seeking to prevent SyQuest from distributing SyJet(TM) 1.5 GB cartridges in that country.

Iomega Corp. filed a patent, design and copyright infringement lawsuit against SyQuest in France on March 3, 1998. Iomega then filed a motion with the court shortly afterward asking it to prohibit SyQuest from distributing SyJet cartridges in that country in view of the alleged infringement. The court rejected Iomega's motion after a summary proceeding held in April, clearing the way for SyQuest to continue distributing the high-capacity cartridges in France.

''We believe that Iomega's actions have nothing to do with legitimate intellectual property rights,'' said Tom Tokos, SyQuest vice president and general counsel. ''We will continue to demonstrate to the court that the technology Iomega claims as its own was, in fact, either developed by SyQuest or widely known and understood throughout the industry before Iomega laid claim to it.''

The day before the French court issued its decision denying Iomega's motion to block sales of the SyJet cartridge, SyQuest received notice that Iomega had filed another suit making similar claims with regard to SyQuest's SparQ(TM) 1.0 GB cartridges.

''This SparQ suit is just another attempt by Iomega to use the legal system to stifle a serious competitive threat in the European market,'' Tokos said. ''I anticipate that our response will
be very similar in nature to the response SyQuest filed in Iomega's unsuccessful summary proceeding in which it failed to stop French distribution of our SyJet product.''
