Joe: That's your favorite theory. :-) And, you are probably right, that that's at least part of the reason. I can't believe it's still under 20.

All: I have just returned from the VLSI shareholder's meeting. Apparently the shareholders voted down some of the stock increase propositions. There was a presentation on 97, and Q1-98. Some spreadsheets were put up to make the point that VLSI's downturn this year was typical across the semi industry. A discussion of the future presented an upturn in the second half; Strong growth in 99, perhaps even coming in the first quarter, which would be unusual given VLSI's recent seasonality, but reflects the incremental sales they expect from several new products which will start shipping in high volume in 99. Updates on some of the new products coming out: CDMA chip samples will be shipping very soon, verification complete in a matter of days (look for an announcement upcoming), and multiple design wins; New orders for IS-136 handset chips; DECT sales strong; Set-top doing well; Divx - optimism on sales. After the meeting I had private chats with Sunil Mehta and Rich Beyer, concerning the stock drop yesterday, Ericsson business, ordering trends, the Malaysian fab, and some other items. I will post a note on those discussions later. Jim
