Net sales for the 1998 first quarter increased 7.7 percent to a first- quarter record $55.4 million from $51.4 million for the same quarter last year. Unit sales of LitterMaid increased approximately fivefold, strongly contributing to first-quarter sales growth. The gross profit margin improved 2.3 percentage points in a year-over-year comparison to 23.3 percent, benefiting from companywide productivity improvements and increased sales of LitterMaid.
