The expansion covers all major cities including Turkey's capital, Ankara, as well as the major tourist areas such as Antalya. Under the terms of the contract, macrocellular GSM capacity and coverage on Telsim's network will be enhanced countrywide including the deployment of capacity solutions such as microcellular. Turkey is one of the most vibrant mobile communications markets in Europe, with the current GSM subscriber figure of 1.5 million set to increase to almost 7 million by 2002.(1) The implementation work - installing and commissioning Motorola CIG's current GSM infrastructure portfolio - and new technologies as they are introduced to the market - will be undertaken jointly by Motorola CIG's and Telsim's technical teams. The two companies will also work together to ensure the timely introduction of new technologies to the Turkish cellular communications market. Within the scope of the agreement, Telsim anticipates that other Motorola developments and enabling communication technologies will also be introduced into the Turkish market as they emerge from other Motorola business groups and sectors. Turkey is a market with huge opportunity, and we will ensure that Motorola supports Telsim in this exciting market." Telsim's GSM network was brought into commercial service in May 1994. Motorola won its first contract with Telsim in November 1994, and started commercial service in January 1995. In December 1996, Telsim and Motorola CIG announced a $90 million expansion contract. Initially, Telsim extended its network to 79 provinces and over 1,000 populated areas throughout Turkey, while offering GSM subscribers added value services such as voice messaging, fax/data and short message service. On 27 April 1998, Telsim paid a licence fee of $500 million to the Turkish government for the right to operate a GSM network for the next 25 years. The combined efforts of Telsim and Motorola will now provide the necessary speed in establishing the right capacity and the right quality of the GSM network to achieve the ambitious targets of Telsim.
