Both the gas and TDI versions of the new Beetle provide better mileage and performance over the original.

No doubt the new Beetle is far safer than the original and according to the testing, it also rates higher than the Golf according to the link I previously cited:

In the first sentence states it clearly:
The top-rated small car in
the high-speed crash test is the same as the
top-rated small car in last week's slow-speed
crash test: the Volkswagen Beetle.


Go down to the "Crash Worthy" display and Beetle gets "Good", Golf/Jetta gets "Marginal". The Honda Civic ranks second and well above Golf. In fact, Golf /Jetta ranks near the bottom.
