Other items from the VLSI meeting and later chats:

Stock - Management doesn't understand the stock drop yesterday either, said they heard much of the selling was coming from Goldman Sachs.

Ericsson - Has traditionally given TI the DSP oriented projects, and VLSI the ASIC oriented work. That snafu and rumors last fall which caused the precipitous decline in VLSI share price was blown way out of proportion to the facts. In hindsight they agree it could have been addressed with a company statement at the time (and perhaps VLSI shares would today be at a higher plateau). Bottom line: TI has not taken away any Ericsson business at VLSI's expense. period.

Orders - Still slow overall; Management remains optimistic for resuming growth in the 2nd half, but continuing strict cost controls.

Malaysian fab - Still proceeding on schedule.

Additionally, the company is making R&D investments in extremely leading edge technologies, which should pay off greatly for shareholders in the future.

In summary, I do not think it's a matter of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, because the company is not loosing money, and VLSI has already substantially reorganized. It is more that of learning to weather the seasonal nature of the business, and looking forward to very likely, a large increase in both wireless and digital entertainment revenue beginning 1999 as the new products ship in volume.
