Refresher Course: Intrinsyc Software Inc. is a small Canadian (for now) company whose strength lies in its capabilities in the Windows CE embedded systems computing market. I say "for now" because the company recently announced a merger with Annasoft Systems out of San Diego. With this merger, the newly formed company will be U.S. based and U.S. listed. Intrinsyc is the leading independent Windows CE technology provider to the embedded systems market. The company develops, markets and supports licensable software components and development tools for original equipment manufacturers (OEM's) which are building the next generation of feature rich, internet enabled consumer and electronics products. In case you do not know, Windows CE (WinCE) is a software operating system (O/S) which has been developed by Microsoft for use in embedded computing. An embedded system is any product other than a desktop PC which contains computer chips (98% of all CPU's, 4B shipped in 1997). Some examples of embedded systems include cell phones, ATM's, industrial automation equipment, medical equipment, watches, VCR's - the list is endless. Because of the standardized software operating system and the resultant promise of interconnectivity and compatibility, many OEM's have begun to produce products using WinCE. The products include such things as PDA's (personal digital assistants), cell phones and industrial automation equipment. The embedded computing market is HUGE with more than 7B embedded processors in use and growing at 30% p.a. compound. Microsoft intends to grab as much of this market as it can. In a recent article by CNET News ( news.com ) Bill Gates is quoted as saying: "........We're going to invest literally billions in driving WinCE to be the same type of standard on these devices as it is on the PC," WinCE is based on Windows 95 and Windows NT and, consequently, there is already a large number (millions) of programmers around the world who can write applications for WinCE. The market is growing at lightning speed and there are many small companies vying for position within the WinCE market. The companies which will be successful in this market are those that can facilitate the efficient and timely production of software for use on devices operating on WinCE. Intrinsyc Software Inc. is such a company. Unfortunately, in the course of its merger with Annasoft, the company has not been able to provide news since its announcement on 31 March 1998 of the merger due to SEC requirements. The merger process is ongoing and should soon be completed. So keep watching and note the share price of $1.95. Bill C(odfish)
