National Semiconductor Corp. (NSM): The semiconductor company said it will report a larger-than-expected loss in its fourth quarter ending May 31, hurt by slower sales of its chips to personal computer makers. The company also expects to report disappointing earnings in its first quarter ending in August, and said it may even lose money during that quarter. National was expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 19 cents a diluted share, according to a survey of analysts by IBES. It was expected to earn 3 cents a share in the first quarter. National Semiconductor fell 1 15/16 to 18 7/8.
